How to Tie the Palomar Knot – Step by Step
- Double the line — Pull about 6 inches of doubled line through the hook eye.
- Tie a simple overhand knot — Create a loose overhand knot with the doubled line, leaving the hook dangling below.
- Pass the hook through the loop — Hold the overhand knot between thumb and forefinger, then pass the hook through the large loop.
- Moisten and tighten — Wet the knot with saliva or water, then pull both ends of the line simultaneously to cinch the knot down to the eye.
- Trim the tag end — Cut the tag end close, leaving about 1/8 inch.
When to Use the Palomar Knot
Hooks, crankbaits, jigs, swivels — anything with an eye. Works with braided line, fluorocarbon, and monofilament. Not ideal for very large eyes or lures with multiple hooks close together.
