How to Catch Redfish (Red Drum): Complete Inshore Fishing Guide

Redfish (red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus) are the signature inshore species of the Gulf Coast and South Atlantic — explosive, hard-fighting, and accessible from kayaks, wade fishing, or skiffs. Their distinctive “bull’s-eye” spot on the tail and copper coloring make them unmistakable, and their willingness to attack lures in shallow water makes them ideal targets for sight fishing. Catching tailing redfish on a 7-weight fly rod or a popping cork setup is among the most exciting fishing in North America.

Redfish: The Inshore Powerhouse

Redfish are found from the Chesapeake Bay south through the Florida Keys, across the Gulf Coast to Texas. “Slot” reds (18–27 inches) are the most targeted — they fight incredibly hard on light tackle. “Bull reds” (30+ inches, 15–40 lbs) gather in large fall schools offshore for spawning and provide incredible action on heavier tackle.

Best Redfish Gear

For inshore slot reds: 7’–7’6″ medium to medium-heavy spinning rod, 3000–4000 reel, 20–30 lb braid with 20–25 lb fluorocarbon leader. For bull reds: step up to medium-heavy, 30–40 lb braid with 30 lb fluoro. Fly fishing: 8–9 weight rod with a fast-sinking line in shallow flats, intermediate in gin-clear water.

Gold Spoon Secret: A 1/2 oz gold Johnson spoon cast just ahead of a tailing redfish and retrieved at medium speed past its nose is the most exciting redfish technique there is. The flash triggers an immediate strike. Keep it just fast enough to stay above the grass.

Where to Find Redfish

  • Grass flats: Redfish tail in 6–24 inches of water over seagrass, rooting for crabs, shrimp, and mullet. Look for “tails” (the fish’s tail sticking above the surface) and wakes.
  • Oyster bars: Prime redfish habitat. Fish the upcurrent edge where baitfish concentrate. Wade or pole quietly.
  • Mangrove shorelines: Red drum hold tight to mangrove roots, especially on high tides when water floods the root zone.
  • Cuts and channels: Moving water concentrates bait and draws redfish on tidal changes.
  • Bull red schools (fall): September–November, large schools of 20–40 lb fish gather just outside the surf. Look for birds, diving pelicans, and nervous water.

Sight Fishing & Poling

Sight fishing for redfish is the pinnacle of inshore fishing. From the casting platform of a shallow-draft skiff, one angler poles while the other casts. Spot tailing fish or wakes, lead the fish by 3–5 feet, and land the lure quietly in its path. Redfish are sensitive to boat noise — use a push pole, not a trolling motor, and stay at least 50 feet away from tailing fish.

FAQ

What is the best lure for redfish?
A 1/2 oz gold spoon for sight fishing tailing redfish in shallow water is unbeatable. For deeper water and docks, a 3–4 inch paddle tail soft plastic on a 1/4 oz jig head in red/chartreuse or white/chartreuse is the most versatile redfish lure. A popping cork with live shrimp underneath is the most consistent producer for beginners.
What is the best time to fish for redfish?
Early morning (first light to 2 hours after sunrise) is consistently the best time. Tailing activity on grass flats peaks during this window. Incoming tide over grass flats also concentrates redfish, regardless of time of day. Fall (September–November) is the overall best season for both slot reds and trophy bull reds.
